My home is here in Issaquah, WA. on the Issaquah creek with my wife Teresa, two cats, twelve hens, two roosters, seven greylag geese, and a outdoor aviary with doves, finches and button quail. Some of my hobbies include dabbling at woodworking and collecting antique radios and test equipment.

HP Early Retirement (19 years)

As a retired 19-year veteran with Hewlett-Packard, much of my time was spent troubleshooting network performance problems for customers, implementing OpenView, Network Node Manager for enterprise network management, and preparing network capacity plans for new network designs. I've also assisted the HP sales force in configuring HP9000 servers and storage for HP customers.

During my last 2 1/2 years at HP, I was the full-time UNIX Server/Storage SE at the on-site Hewlett -Packard team at Amazon.com. The official information about this relationship is:

  • Hewlett Packard is the primary Internet infrastructure provider for Amazon.com. HP supplies 90% of Amazons' applicable infrastructure requirements. This includes Internet servers and storage for the Amazon Web site, distribution and supply-chain management, and PCs for Amazon employees.
  • HP supports Amazon in a monitoring role to ensure that the on line retail site stays up and working during peak transaction periods,
  • HP supplies Amazon with multiple support services that span the entire gamut of Windows NT and Unix servers, including A-class servers and the SuperDome.
  • HP also supplies Business Continuity Support, which requires HP's onsite presence at Amazons' operations with strategies for Web site outage prevention.

Not your average technical and scientific professional. More like an 'out of the box' thinker with drive and vision Net/System Security Consulting, Network Capacity Planning, NNM Implementation Enterprise-Wide, Upgraded Amazon.com's Infrastructure in 2 years.

One of my greatest passions is teaching at the University of Washington Extension Department, in the areas of LAN Troubleshooting and Diagnosis, UNIX, TCP/IP and Network Administration, LAN/WAN Network Design and Management, and Advanced Network Management. I've taught in the program since 1993. The HP Education group has enlisted me as a teacher as well.

Education
Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering (1973)
Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics (1978)
HP courses in HP-UX, Ethernet, TCP/IP, WAN, network simulation, C programming.

Follows are three HP Professional books I've published through Prentice Hall:

OPENVIEW NETWORK NODE MANAGER, is my third book, printed September 2000. It is based on my experience with NNM since the 1.0 days when the product wasn't based on the developers kit and the main application was called xnm. I have installed NNM at dozens of HP customer sites and taught the HP customer training. The material between the covers is based on a fairly unique perspective of an HP consultant.

ARCHITECTING ENTERPRISE SOLUTIONS WITH UNIX NETWORKING was title of my second book written 1998 and is based on my experiences working at HP. It shares methodologies for architecting, designing, implementing, and managing computer solutions involving networks, desktop computers, and UNIX servers. I have developed and applied them successfully to real world customer situations.

PRACTICAL PLANNING FOR NETWORK GROWTH was the title of first book written in 1996 and is based on my experiences working at HP, and was written to share the many secrets of network performance analysis that I have developed and applied successfully to real world customer situations.
