Networking

My home network consists of the following:
  • SMC Barricade Router with 8 switched LAN ports and one WAN port.
  • The router acts as a DHCP server for guest computers.
  • Wireless access is via a LinkSys WAP11 and an Apple Airport Extreme.
  • Gigabit Ethernet is via n SMC 5-port switch .
  • DNS service is provided by a Macintosh BeigeG3 running Mac OS X Panter server.
  • Next on my Do List is to get everything to work with IPv6.
Simulation
  • In years past I used the Comdisco BONeS discrete event simulator.
  • Today I use OpNet's IT Guru, student edition to stay sharp.
  • OMNeT++ is also on my list of free simulators to gain expertise with.
  • To validate a simulation I use simple spreadsheets and queueing theory.
  • See my book "Practical Planning for Network Growth".
