As a Network Performance Specialist who works for Hewlett-Packard's
Professional Services Organization in Bellevue, WA., much of my
time is spent troubleshootng performance problems for customers,
and preparing network capacity plans for new network designs.
I also conducted capacity studies for several large customers
who have implemented the SAP business software across their enterprise.
This book is based on my experiences working at HP, and was written
to share the many secrets of network performance analysis that
I have developed and applied successfully to real world customer
situations.
I also teach classes at the University
of Washington Extension Department, in the areas of LAN Troubleshooting
and Diagnosis, UNIX TCP/IP and Network Administration, and LAN/WAN
network design and management. I holds a Masters Degree in Applied
Mathematics and a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering.
I live in Issaquah, WA. on the creek with my wife Teresa, two
cats, ten bardrock hens and three greylag geese. Hobbies include
dabbling at woodworking and collecting antique radios and test
equipment.

My Book Teaches Proven Methods That Won't Go Out Of Date In The
Next Six Months, and Helps You Get the Network That's Just Right
For Your Organization.
As computer networks grow, Network Managers and System Administrators
such as myself, are continuously challenged to improve their network's
performance.
A network that's too small can slow you down and squeeze your
productivity. One that's too big can eat your budget and confuse
your users. Whether you have an Ethernet or a Wide Area Network,
my book will give you the tools to analyze your needs and tailor
a network to suit you perfectly.
I explain capacity planning in everyday terms, and included dozens
of illustrations and real-life examples. I cover the performance
properties of network devices and introduce a range of analysis
tools and methods.
My book offers multi-vendor, multi-protocol, heterogeneous tools
for evaluating and improving network performance. It covers the
fundamentals of network performance analysis; the parameters found
in media such as Ethernet, Token< Ring and FDDI; interconnect
devices such as hubs, bridges, routers, and Ethernet switches;
wide area technologies such as T-1, Frame Relay, and X.25; server
architecture; and the application of practical tools such as LOTUS
123, Mathcad,
and PlanNet to real network performance problems.
PRACTICAL FEATURES:
- Book shows how practical tools such as LOTUS 123, MathCAD,
and PlanNet may be applied to real network performance problems.
- Performance aspects of LAN technologies, such as Ethernet,
Token Ring, FDDI, and ATM, and WAN technologies, such as T-1,
Frame Relay, and X.25 are discussed.
- Book also includes an MS-DOS diskette with all the Mathcad
examples in the text.
